Lloyd's Legacy

Lloyd Cowan believed that no one with sporting potential should be hindered by a lack of support. The Bursary is committed to upholding this ethos by providing annual grants to qualified coaches and unfunded athletes aged 16-23 facing financial barriers while pursuing developmental opportunities in athletics.

Lloyd's most significant coaching relationship was with Christine Ohuruogu, whom he guided to world and Olympic 400m titles. Christine recalls, "Lloyd once told me that everyone has a dream, and he aimed to support athletes and coaches in achieving their goals, no matter how big or small. He was dedicated to building the future of athletics.

"This Bursary recognises, encourages, and supports athletes and coaches who aspire to become better versions of themselves through athletics. I am incredibly proud. This is a fitting legacy for Lloyd, a phenomenal man and coach who dedicated his life to inspiring young people to thrive."

LCB TRUSTEES

Christine Ohuruogu MBE is one of the most decorated female athletes in British history, with 17 global medals across 400m and 4x400m. Coached by Lloyd Cowan, she made history as the first British woman to win Olympic gold over 400m, and she is one of only three athletes ever to medal in six consecutive World Championships. Christine and Lloyd formed a formidable pairing, and she is immensely proud to have called him both her coach and friend.

Abdul Buhari is a retired international athlete who represented Team GB in the discus at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Juggling a career in investment banking with global competition, Abdul now works in private banking. Throughout Abdul’s throwing career, Lloyd was a confidant and mentor to him, providing encouragement, support, and guidance. Abdul is honoured and privileged to be one of the founding trustees of the Lloyd Cowan Bursary.

Cherry Alexander OBE is the current Vice President of European Athletics. She has worked at UK Athletics for over 30 years, delivering their Major Events Strategy. Cherry took on the role of Managing Director for the highly successful World and Para Athletics Championships held in London in 2017. Lloyd Cowan was a mainstay throughout that journey and, as importantly, a dear friend. Cherry feels hugely honoured to be a trustee in Lloyd's name.

She has worked on televised events in the UK, as well as World Championships and Olympic Games. Lloyd Cowan was a work colleague, friend and coach whom she deeply respected and admired for his humour and generosity. Karen is proud to be a trustee for the bursary.

Melanie Anning is a journalist who’s involved in developing track and field at the grassroots and is a member of UKA’s RACEquality team. Lloyd coached her daughter from age 16, reigniting Amber’s self-belief through his care, kindness, dedication and coaching brilliance. A founding trustee of the Lloyd Cowan Bursary, Melanie is honoured to work alongside a team committed to ensuring that Lloyd’s outstanding legacy continues.

A two-time Paralympic Champion, seven-time World Champion, a Commonwealth Champion and former world record holder, she has been a leading figure in T38 sprinting for over a decade. Sophie first met Lloyd in her early teens and was inspired by his warmth and encouragement. She is proud to honour his legacy as a trustee, supporting the next generation of para-athletes and their coaches.

Before applying for a grant, read our Frequently Asked Questions.

The application process opens in Autumn for one month, typically from late September to late October each year. Bursaries are awarded 4-6 weeks after the closing date. Athletes and Coaches must apply directly using our online forms. Stay tuned to our social media for details of when applications open and for other updates. No other application methods are accepted.

Yes. Applicants must be based in the UK and licensed as athletes or coaches to one of the home countries governing bodies (Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland or England).

The selection process occurs two weeks after the application deadline. The Bursary Committee reviews and discusses each applicant, and within the following four weeks, we notify all applicants of the outcome.

If your application is successful, four weeks after the deadline you will receive an email to the address you entered on the application form, requesting your bank details for direct payment of the Bursary. If your application is unsuccessful and no LCB Grant is awarded, we will inform you via email within the same timescale.

No, your application’s success is not determined by your athlete ranking or the rankings of athletes you coach. Instead, it relies on your application’s content, demonstrating your dedication to athletic development and the specific needs you address.

Each year is a clean slate. You can reapply for the Lloyd Cowan Bursary even if you have or have not received one before. Past receipt of a Bursary does not guarantee future success in the application process.
