What an incredible morning for Athletics for All in Sussex. The two fastest British women in history over 400m; Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu and World Athletics Indoor champion Amber Anning, joined us for our latest event. It was a day the primary school children who took part will remember for a long time.
Sixty 10 and 11 year-olds from schools across Sussex got to meet two of Britain’s greatest athletes. They spent the morning running, jumping and throwing at the superb new athletics track at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham.
The GB 400m record holder, Amber Anning, summed it up perfectly:
“I grew up in Sussex, so it was wonderful to be close to home at Christ’s Hospital School. It was special to be part of something like this with the bursary. The new track is brilliant, and the kids had a great time learning from some of the best athletes and coaches in the region. Lloyd would have loved seeing so many children being inspired to start athletics.”
A huge thank you to our fantastic coaches, who shared their expertise and energy throughout the morning: Patrick Apantaku, Pippa Earley, Mensah Elliott, Diani Walker, Bob Willows and Eric Davison.
Thanks also to the athletes who gave up their time to support and inspire the year six pupils: Ruby Jerges, Scarlet Margaroli, Freya Brennand, Jaiten Best, Charlie Fisher and Louis Opoku.
We’re grateful to Sara Cunningham-Neuff of Neuff Athletic for supporting the event. Thanks to Head of Athletics Hannah Nwandu and everyone at Christ’s Hospital School for such a warm welcome. And thank you to the Christ’s Hospital students who worked so hard to keep the day running smoothly.
This event was a special part of Lloyd’s legacy. Two of the athletes he coached to greatness, Christine and Amber, gave up their time to honour his work. They came to inspire the next generation.
This is why we do Athletics for All: to give children the chance to learn from outstanding coaches and athletes. It’s about discovering new sports, and above all, having fun.
